Summer Pearson - A Special Little Girl!
VW Fans Julie and Brent have started a special website for their daughter Summer Pearson so she has great memories of her hard fight against a brain Tumour. If you get the chance to meet Summer you will know she is a little ray of sunshine and a real little fighter.
Summer was born on Friday 14th March 2003, she is our special Ray of Sun Shine who is fighting her Brain Tumour and adjusting to losing her Vision.
Summer was diagnosed with Pilocystic Astrocytoma on 21st March 2005 at just 2 years old. Summer's symptoms were not obvious but were becoming increasingly concerning. She had stopped walking was being sick (projectile) and her vision seemed to be deteriorating. Summer's GP had referred her to a Paeditrician but we decided to take her to A&E where she was admitted. Blood tests came back negative so we thought Summer might need glasses. The MRI scan showed the tumour along with Hydrocephalus, all the ventricles were blocked so the spinal fluid couldn't drain properly. Summer was immediately transferred to Alder Hey the Children's Hospital in Liverpool where she was operated on within 15 hours. We waited 8 excruciating hours and Summer miraculously pulled through to be then told that she had lost her vision another shock to the system. The Surgeon was able to debulk about 70% of Summer's tumour but the rest was inoperable because of the location. It was still wrapped around the right optic nerve, the hypothalamus and more dangerously the main blood vessels. We were told Summer's Pilocystic Astrocytoma is benign and slow growing.....and was put on observation.
In August 2005 Summer went for her three month scan the tumour has regrown quite significantly. Summer had a central line put in and started intense Chemotherapy which last three months. In December 2005 her MRI scan revealed the tumour was stable no more growth. It was such a relief.
Summer has just had another scan in June 2006 and we have been informed that Summer's tumour has shrunk a little bit!! which we didn't expect, our little angel.
Summer is on maintenance Chemotherapy now 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off until March 2007 when she completes Chemotherapy and goes on observation.
We have entered into a whole new world now that Summer is registered blind and we are learning how to stimulate her and involve her in everyday life and activities. Summer loves "Talking", Camping, Animals, Music, Braille Books, Handbags, making people laugh and meeting people. She is a happy person who puts a smile on everyones face.
